Our Learning Story- in progress

École Dorothea Walker is a dual track French Immersion Elementary school with students from Kindergarten to Grade Six in the French program and Kindergarten to Grade Five in the English program.   As educators, we strive to model the collaborative culture and growth mindset we hope to instill in our students .  A key goal for us is the implementation of Inquiry models of instruction  and the re-imagining of our classrooms as innovative and flexible learning spaces. This means we also look to the natural world around us as spaces to provoke  curiosity. Teachers are learning together and supporting each other as we move forward on this journey . We begin with a kind and caring community of educators as we strive to build the same culture in our classrooms. By shifting instructional practice we intend to foster curiosity, creativity and innovation while strengthening empathy and problem solving skills. Learner agency means our students develop their sense of responsibility to themselves, to others and to their community.

We have focused on social emotional learning extensively over the past several years, helping students develop self-regulation skills in order to increase academic success and enhance emotional health. For the coming school year we will continue to build these skills while placing an emphasis on the development of the Core Competencies identified in B.C.'s redesigned curriculum. We are committed to Equity in Action, to creating conditions which empower every learner with culturally relevant learning experiences. It is our intention to support every students' educational journey as they become learners, thinkers, collaborators and contributors.
