Principal’s Message

DWE Principal's Message, September 6, 2016

It is an absolute pleasure to be joining the Ecole Dorothea Walker Elementary community! Thank you for the many warm messages of welcome I have received.

We anticipate having 8 divisions in the English stream and 11 divisions in French Immersion, with approximately 480 students this year from Kindergarten through to Grade 6.

The coming year will be an exciting one as we begin to implement our re-designed Provincial Curriculum which is available for you to view at www.curriculum.gov.bc.ca.  I encourage you to explore this site and learn more about the coming changes and rationale behind them. We will also continue to work towards the two school goals set through the last school planning process. Our first goal is to promote the social and emotional well-being of the school community by maximizing the enjoyment of the journey of learning.  Our second goal, which is integrated into the strategies and rationale of the first goal, is to promote inquiry in student and staff learning.  We invite and encourage all members of our community to be healthy and curious learners.  As a staff we will continue to explore ideas and seek strategies to embed both social emotional learning and the inquiry process into our practice. Please join us at PAC meetings as we introduce ideas and review our progress.

We have worked hard to establish a DWE Code of Conduct which is posted on the website and will be included in student agendas.  When we all have clear expectations for behaviour, we have a much higher chance of success both in and out of the school. We appreciate your support as we work together to maintain a positive learning environment for all students.

It is our belief that we teach respectful behavior through our own conduct and day to day interactions. In decision making, please know that it is our intention to make the most equitable decision for all involved, guided by what we believe to be in the best interests of our students. As a staff, we believe in restorative justice and will do our best to teach, model and practice this process.

If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me either by email or phone.

I look forward to meeting you and working with you and your children over the coming years!
